Lupins grow three to five feet tall and should be planted in groups toward the back of a garden. They will bloom from spring through summer in temperate climates. The Russell hybrids are those generally cultivated for gardens. They might not bloom for the first few years or if the summers are long and hot. It is best to stake them early on attaching their new growth throughout their growing period. Lupins can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere into ammonia, fertilizing the soil for other plants.
